One of the more common issues users run into with Flash Player and Internet Explorer is making sure that the Flash Player plug-in is actually enabled. This post will describe the simple process required to check if Flash Player is disabled, and if so, how to properly enable it.
First, navigate to the Adobe Flash Player About page: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
In the screen shot below, you'll notice a white box with a red X that I've highlighted with a yellow outline. If your screen looks similar, then your browser was unable to load the Flash Player plug-in.
Next we'll check to see if the plug-in is both installed and enabled. Click the gear icon in the upper right corner of the browser window and select "Manage add-ons" from the menu.
The Manage Add-ons dialog will appear. Verify that "Toolbars and Extensions" is selected in the left hand pane and then locate the "Shockwave Flash Object" entry on the right. I've selected this entry in the screenshot below.
Once found, check the status. It will be either "Enabled" or "Disabled". If "Disabled", select the row and click the Enable button which I've highlighted in the lower right corner of the dialog. Once enabled, click the Close button to dismiss the dialog.
- If the plug-in was already enabled, you might be encountering a problem with ActiveX Filtering. Please see this post for further details.
- If you are unable to find the Shockwave Flash Object, please try reinstalling Flash Player from this page.
- If you are using the 64-bit version of Internet Explorer, please note that you'll need to install the 64-bit version of Flash Player. You can check your version of Internet Explorer by clicking the gear icon and selecting "About Internet Explorer" from the menu.
Finally, refresh the page (press the F5 key) and you should be presented with a page that looks similar to the
following screenshot. You'll notice that the white box highlighted before now contains version information for the currently installed Flash Player. Congratulations, Flash Player is now properly configured.
